Floating IP OVH | An Intro
A Floating IP can be described as a public, static IP address. It is used to expose services that offer high flexibility. Furthermore, we can assign this type of IP to an instance or a network function like Load Balancer and then be quickly re-assigned as well.
Public access to a cloud server may require flexibility. With Floating IP, it is possible to manage public IP allocations through automation via the API.
However, our experts would like to point out that Floating IP is available only for Public Cloud services, designed for cloud-native use cases and automation. They help expose a private instance or a private network service to the public network.
The backend system configuration when using Floating IP is entirely automatic. In other words, no manual setup is needed. However, they need a Gateway to map a public IP address to an instance or network service.
How to obtain public IP addresses in the OVHcloud Control Panel
We can easily get public IP addresses by heading to the OVHcloud Control Panel and opening the Public Cloud section.
Here we will come across the Public Ips option that allows us to manage Additional IP and Floating IP addresses according to our needs.
Once we assign a Floating IP to an instance, it will be associated with that instance’s public network interface. Then, we can configure our networking settings or DNS records to point to the Floating IP, allowing traffic to be redirected to the assigned instance.
