How to Install Debian 9 Stretch?

by | Oct 19, 2020

Trying to install Debian 9 stretch? Here’s how we do it.

Here at Bobcares, we have seen several such Debian related installations as part of our Server Management Services for web hosts and online service providers.

Today we’ll take a look at how to install Debian 9 stretch.

Know more about Debian Stretch

The development codename for Debian 9 is Stretch.

The Stretch release is the first version of Debian to feature the modern branch of GnuPG in the gnupg package.

Also, it provides better defaults, a more modular architecture, and improved smartcard support.

How to install Debian 9 stretch

Now let’s take a look at how our Support Engineers install Debian 9 stretch.

Downloading Debian

To install Debian 9 Stretch, first access the download section of the Debian website and choose the way to download it.

There are many ways to download it. We prefer to download it via torrent.

After that, we choose cd (smaller size and smaller packets included) or DVD (large size and more packets), and the processor architecture that is usually 64-bit. And finally burn it to a DVD or USB drive.

Install Debian 9 Stretch

1. Below is the first image that Debian displays when you enter the installer. Here we choose Graphical install and press Enter.

install debian 9 stretch

2. Then we choose language and time zone and click on continue.

3. After clicking on continue, the next step is to choose the “locales”. That is, the system’s regional configuration. After that, we must choose the input language.

4. After clicking the continue button, the installer will start writing the changes that you have selected or entered during the above steps.

5. The next thing is about the network configuration. Now, we enter the hostname and then the domain name. Then click Continue.

6. After this, the next window is to set the root password. Enter the root password. Next, it follows user creation and new user password creation. Set up a user and password in the next windows. For that, enter the full name of your username.

7. After entering the username, click on the Continue button. The next is to set the password. Set a strong password.

8. The next step is the most delicate part of installing any operating system: Disk Partitioning. Here, we can choose any option, but we tried to select ‘Manual’ as we wanted to have control of what partitioned.

9. The next window is the hard disk of our computer, create a virtual disk from 0 and does not even have partitions. Here, select the disk and click on Continue.

10. If the disk is “new” it warns that there is no partition table, but the installer offers to create it. So we can say yes.

11. After clicking on Continue, in the next window we can create the first partition that we will use for the system as such. Select the free space and click on continue. Then we enter the size. Also, Debian recommends a swap partition so we put a smaller size than the total.

12. So now we allocate the size to the disk. Then under the ‘Type of the new partition’ section, we select Primary.

13. Next, we choose the location to be Beginning.

14. Then we need to modify the filesystem type (Ext4) and the mounting point (/) and leave it as it is. Select that we have finished defining partition and click on continue.

15. Now create the swap partition with the remaining disk space. So select the remaining free space and click on continue.

16. Then we again tell the installer that we want to create a new partition but this time it will be logical.

17. In the next step we define that it will be a swap partition.

18. We have now finished defining the partition, so we click on Continue.

This way, we did a simple and basic partitioning in GNU/LINUX. One partition for / and another for Swap.

However, if you are installing this installation on the main computer and “real” and the hard disk must already be partitioned and what you should do is simply say where you want to install the system. Then we say we have finished partitioning the disk and click Continue for the installer to make the changes.

19. After that, Debian will ask us if we want to analyze another DVD. Here, we use a DVD so we answer all as NO.

20. Next step is to select the software to install. It completely depends on your needs.

21. Here we choose MATE as our desktop environment. After the installation process of the chosen software, you will be asked to install the Boot loader.

22. Then we say yes, and it will ask where we want it to be. For that, we select the hard drive and click continue.

23. Finally, we must see the installation completion window.
