LiteSpeed license check – Do it with ease

by | Nov 9, 2019

Looking for a fast WebServer which can replace Apache?

LiteSpeed can automatically read and use the existing Apache server configurations. Therefore it comes handy in the webserver switch. However, LiteSpeed license often creates errors too.

We often receive requests to install LiteSpeed and fix its errors as a part of our Server Management Services

Today, let’s see how our Support Engineers check the status of the LiteSpeed license and fix its errors

What is LiteSpeed?

Let’s now check more on the LiteSpeed webserver.

LiteSpeed web server doesn’t need any special setup. Also, it is compatible with major panels like cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin, CyberPanel and many more web applications.

LiteSpeed Enterprise provides different licenses to choose for serving everyone from the hobbyist with a single website to a large hosting provider handling thousands of clients.

More about LiteSpeed License check

The LiteSpeed server updates the license key every day against the license server. Also, when it restarts the server it will check against the license server as well.

In case, if the license server is not reachable then the server will continue to work with the current local license key. And this continues unless the current local license key expires.

Therefore, here is an advantage if the LiteSpeed license server is down then it will not affect the server. Because it will continue to work with the local license key.

Our Support Engineers check the license status in two ways:

1. Through WHM

Normally, after the LiteSpeed installation, we verify it is running or not through WHM > Plugins > LiteSpeed Web Server.

This will confirm that LiteSpeed is running or not.

2. Through commands

Also, we check the current license of LiteSpeed using the command

/usr/local/lsws/bin/lshttpd -t

Common Errors with LiteSpeed license check

Recently, one of our customers experienced an error while checking the LiteSpeed status. Here is the screenshot of the error message.

Let’s see how our Support Engineers fix this error

The error message clearly says that the server was not able to find the serial number nor the trial key.

So, our Support Engineers investigated the issue and found that the license which customer was using was expired.

Therefore, we suggested our Customer to obtain a new license. And then we manually changed the server to a new license key. For that, we followed the below steps.

1. Initially, we navigated to the configuration path where the serial number file is saved. For that, we ran the below command

cd /usr/local/lsws/conf

2. Then, we renamed the previous serial number file to serial.no.old

mv serial.no serial.no.old

3. Also, we renamed the license key file as well.

mv license.key license.key.old

4. After that, save the serial number as a file named “serial.no” under /lsws/conf directory

echo "" > serial.no

5. Navigate to the bin folder

cd ../bin

6. To release the license enter the below command

./lshttpd -r

7. Finally, restart the LiteSpeed server using the command

./lswsctrl restart
