OpenVPN Cannot Resolve Host Address error causing trouble? Our in-house Engineers have a solution.

At Bobcares, we offer solutions for every query, big and small, as a part of our Server Management Service.

Let’s take a look at how our Support Team recently helped out a customer with OpenVPN Cannot Resolve Host Address error.

All About OpenVPN Cannot Resolve Host Address Error

Although OpenVPN is remarkable software that permits users to make point-to-point secure internet connections, it still does throw up an error every now and then. The “Cannot resolve host address” is one such error. This error prevents DNS servers from resolving the hostname.

Fortunately, our Support Team has your back. We have come up with three different methods tor resolve this error:

  • Verifying Hostname
  • Looking for errors in configuration files
  • Checking for Firewall interruption

Verifying Hostname

If we use the wrong hostname, we are prone to get the Cannot Resolve Host Address error message. Our Support Techs recommends the following steps to troubleshoot the issue:

  • We can use the ping command to check if the hostname we are using is active or not. For instance,
    ping vpn. **. **. **. **. com
  • We can also use the nslookup and dig command to ensure we are using the right hostname. For instance:
    nslookup vpn. **. **. **. **. com
    dig vpn. **. **. **. **. com

These commands can help us verify if the hostname we are using is active and also connected to the DNS.

Looking for errors in configuration files

An incorrect entry in the OpenVPN configuration files can result in an error. Our Support Techs suggest deleting the current configuration files and replacing them with new files from the OpenVPN website.

Checking for Firewall interruption

In some scenarios the Cannot Resolve Host Address error may be due to a Firewall interruption. Interestingly this is because the firewall assumes the VPN to be a threat.

According to our Support Engineers, turning off the firewall will help overcome this problem. Alternatively, we can also set OpenVPN as an exception in the firewall settings. Once we disable the firewall, we also have to switch off Window’s Defender.

This will allow VPN to connect without any further problems.
