Fixing “OVH ESXi Default Password Not Working” Issue

In this article, we’ll look into some of the actions we may follow to fix the problem if we are attempting to access the VMware ESXi hypervisor on an OVH dedicated server and the default password is not functioning or we have forgotten the password:

ovh esxi default password not working
Solution 1

Double-check that we are entering the password correctly because passwords are case-sensitive. Make sure we are using the appropriate keyboard layout and that Caps Lock is not activated.

Solution 2

Verify that we are logging in with the password we chose for the ESXi installation. It is the password we selected during setup because OVH normally does not set default passwords for ESXi installations.

Solution 3

Using the ESXi Host Console, reset the password:

a. If at all possible, directly access the ESXi host’s physical console.

b. The ESXi host must restart.

c. To access recovery mode, press “Shift” and “R” when the ESXi boot screen appears.

d. From the list of recovery mode options, choose “Reset the ESXi Configuration” or “Reset Password.”

e. To reset the password, adhere to the on-screen instructions. During this process, we can create a new password.

Solution 4

Using the vSphere Client, reset the password:

a. A different user account with the necessary capabilities can be used to log in if we have access to the vSphere Client or Web Client and administrator rights.

b. Select the “Hosts and Clusters” view after logging in.

c. Choose the ESXi host whose password we want to change.

d. Enter the “Configure” tab.

e. From the list of options under “System,” choose “Authentication Services.”

f. Hover the mouse over “Edit” next to “Local Users & Groups.”

g. Select “root” as the user, then click “Edit User.”

h. Change the root user’s password.
