All About IPv6 on OVH with pfSense
Let’s take a look at the things to remember when we configure IPv6 on a pfSense firewall hosted on an OVH server.
- Enabling IPv6 on the OVH server:
Before we configure IPv6 on our pfSense firewall, we have to enable IPv6 on our OVH server. We can do this via the OVH Manager or the command line interface (CLI) of the server.
- Assigning an IPv6 address to the pfSense firewall:
After enabling IPv6 on the server, we can assign an IPv6 address to our pfSense firewall. Furthermore, OVH offers a range of IPv6 addresses that we can use for this purpose.
- Configuring pfSense for IPv6:
When an IPv6 address is assigned to our pfSense firewall, we can configure pfSense to support IPv6 traffic. Additionally, this includes configuring firewall rules to allow IPv6 traffic, configuring routing protocols for IPv6, and configuring DNS servers to support IPv6.
- Testing the IPv6 configuration:
After the pfSense firewall is configured for IPv6, we have to test the configuration to ensure that it’s working as expected. This involves testing connectivity to IPv6-enabled websites or services. Furthermore, testing failover mechanisms ensures continuity of service in the event of a failure.
How to Configure IPv6 on OVH with pfSense
- First, log into the OVH account and head to the IP section, and obtain the IPv6 address block.
- Now, we have to configure the WAN interface on the pfSense firewall. This is done by heading to the Interfaces section of the pfSense web interface and choosing WAN. After that, select the IPv6 Configuration Type as DHCP6.
- Next, we have to configure the LAN interface on the pfSense firewall. This is done by heading to the Interfaces section of the pfSense web interface and choosing LAN. After that, select the IPv6 Configuration Type as Track Interface.
- Then, we have to configure firewall rules to allow traffic to flow between the two interfaces. We can do this by navigating to the Firewall section of the pfSense web interface and creating rules to allow traffic to flow between the WAN and LAN interfaces.
- Finally, we have to test the configuration to ensure that everything is working correctly. We can do this by pinging an IPv6 address from a client on our LAN network and verifying that the ping is successful.
