pfSense Firewall Alias List | More About

by | Sep 26, 2023

The pfSense Firewall Alias List shows the list of network addresses or ports that we can reference in firewall rules. Bobcares, as a part of our pfSense Support Services offers solutions to every query that comes our way.

The pfSense Firewall Alias List

Alias is a collection of network addresses or ports that we can use as a reference in firewall rules in pfSense. When we have several rules involving the same set of addresses or ports, using aliases makes it simpler to administer and maintain firewall rules.

How to set it up?

We must follow the below steps in order to create and manage the alias list:

1. Firstly, sign in to the pfSense web interface using a web browser.

2. From the top menu, pick “Firewall” and then “Aliases.”

3. Click “Add” to add a new alias to the current list.

4. Now, we need to set up aliases. So, provide the details such as Name, Type, Hosts, Networks, Ports, and Content.

5. Click the “Save” button to create the alias.

6. Create or update a rule on the Firewall Rules page for the relevant interface to use an alias in a firewall rule. Depending on the needs of the particular rule, we can use the alias name in the source or destination fields in the rule configuration.

7. Go to the Aliases page, locate the alias in the list, and select it by clicking the “Edit” (pencil icon) or “Delete” (trash can icon) button as appropriate.

8. We can edit an alias at any moment to change its contents. Any firewall rules that use that alias will immediately update to reflect changes to the alias’s content.

9. Test the firewall rules carefully after establishing or changing aliases to make sure that traffic is being permitted.

Conclusion

The management of IP addresses and ports in the firewall rules is made easier with pfSense’s use of aliases. This is particularly beneficial if we have many rules that use the same sets of addresses or ports.
