PfSense HAProxy Access Control Lists

With the HAProxy package from PfSense, we can effectively route, filter, and manage incoming network traffic to meet the individual needs. It is a powerful tool for managing as well as controlling the network traffic. This is not complete without Access Control Lists.

Access control lists, or ACLs, let us test different scenarios and take a specific action based on those tests. These conditions cover almost all aspects of a request. Some of the common usages include routing, authentication, content manipulation, and access rate control for specific clients.

How ACL Works?

In HAProxy, ACLs are specified using conditions that assess an incoming request’s attributes. Conditions may depend on source IP addresses, URL paths, HTTP headers, and other variables. We can also create complex conditions by combining multiple criteria using logical operators. Then, we can link actions to the conditions. Actions specify the course of action for a traffic that meets a given criterion. Rewriting URLs, blocking the request, redirecting it to a particular backend server, and other actions are all possible.

Usually, we apply ACLs in the HAProxy setup’s frontend and backend sections. The backend specifies what should happen when a condition is met. The frontend defines conditions based on incoming requests.
