pfSense on Linode

pfsense linode

Being an open source trustworthy firewall/router computer software distribution based on FreeBSD, many all over the internet trust pfSense. Installing pfSense is a good idea as it provides firewall, VPN, and routing functionality in the cloud-based infrastructure with features including intrusion detection and prevention, load balancing, traffic shaping, etc. In this article, we can see some of the simple steps to install pfSense on Linode.

Installing pfSense

The following steps help with the installation:

    1. Firstly create the Linode in the preferred data center.
    2. Then create two disk images in the RAW format. One should be a 1024 MB image labeled installer and the other will be Linode’s remaining space. We can label it as pfSense.
    3. Now create two configuration profiles with the following settings while continuing with installing pfSense on Linode. In each profile, we also need to disable all the options under Filesystem/Boot Helpers.
      • Installer Profile Label: Installer
        Kernel: Direct Disk

        /dev/sda: pfSense disk image

        /dev/sdb: Installer disk image

        root/boot device: Standard /dev/sdb

      • Boot Profile Label: pfSense

        Kernel: Direct Disk

        /dev/sda: pfSense disk image

        root/boot device: standard /dev/sda
    4. Boot into Rescue Mode, mount the installed disc to /dev/sda, then use the terminal to access the Linode.
    5. Now run the below code.
      # Download and Format Install Media
      curl http://edmi.vanmassenhoven.com/index.php/s/qoqoFKEEjPHya76/download/pfSense-CE-memstick-serial-2.6.0-RELEASE-amd64.img | dd of=/dev/sda
    6. After the command completes, restart the Installer Profile.
    7. Now open the Console.
    8. Then follow the onscreen prompts to install pfSense.
    9. Finally, reboot into pfSense Profile once the installation is complete.
