Let us learn more about the proxmox backup modes with the support of our Proxmox support services at Bobcares.

proxmox backup modes

Proxmox VE is a KVM and LXC-based virtualization technology that allows to construct and manage virtual machines and containers. The VE has numerous backup options to select from, depending on the needs.

Different proxmox backup modes

stop mode

This option gives the maximum backup consistency at the expense of a brief interruption in VM operation.

It works by shutting down the VM in an orderly manner and then running a background QEMU process to backup the VM data.

If the backup was previously operating, the VM returns to full operation mode when it starts. Using the live backup option ensures consistency.

suspend mode

This Proxmox backup mode is for backward compatibility and suspends the VM before calling the snapshot mode.

As suspending the VM causes more downtime and does not always enhance data consistency, the snapshot option is advised instead.

snapshot mode

This option gives the least amount of downtime at the expense of a little inconsistency risk. It works by conducting a Proxmox VE live backup, which copies data blocks while the VM is operating.

To increase consistency, if the guest agent (agent: 1) is enabled and running, it calls guest-fsfreeze-freeze and guest-fsfreeze-thaw.

Incremental mode

This Proxmox backup mode backup is just the changes made to a VM or container since the previous backup. This can help us save time and disk space.

Raw mode

This option generates a raw disk image backup of a virtual machine or container. We cn use the backup to restore the virtual machine or container to its prior condition.
