by | Jan 25, 2020

Oops!! Frustrated with Putty Error Unable To Open Connection? We can help you fix it.

PuTTY error unable to open connection occurs mainly when the hostname fails to resolve to correct IP address.

At Bobcares, we often get requests regarding Putty, as a part of our Server Management Services.

Today, let’s see how our Support Engineers fix this Putty error for our customers.

Why PuTTY?

A PuTTY is a tool used for remotely accessing the server from another computer. This is mainly used if we want secure remote shell access to a UNIX or Linux system.

It supports Telnet, SSH, and Serial ports, so that we can connect either by taking a remote session or directly through a serial cable.

Simply, we use Remote Desktop Connection (RDP) for connecting to a remote Windows machine, the same way, if we want to connect to a Linux server from Windows machine, we use PuTTY.

But we may encounter many errors while dealing with PuTTY. Today, let’s see how our Support Engineers handle it’s ‘Unable To Open Connection’ error.

How we fix PuTTY Error Unable To Open Connection?

Recently, one of our customers approached us saying that he is getting an error like the one shown below:

Putty Error Unable To Open Connection

Our Engineers did a deep dig through the problem and found that the hostname is not resolving to correct IP address.

So, we set it to the correct IP address and this fixed the problem.

Also, we handled a situation where the customer approached us with the same error. But, when we went through the logs, it was showing an ‘Access Denied’ message.

As the customer was using public-key authentication, we made sure that the private key is in PuTTY’s .ppk format.

But, we found that the private key is not entered in the ‘Auth section’. So, our Engineers followed the path below to enter the key.

PuTTY's Connection > SSH > Auth section

Finally, this fixed the problem.
