How to Restore .bak File in Azure SQL Server?

Restoring a .bak file in the Azure SQL Database means bringing a backup file into the Azure SQL Database. The steps for this are a bit different from doing it on a regular SQL Server. Here’s a simple guide on how to do it with the Azure Portal:

restore .bak file in azure sql server

1. Find the Azure SQL Database instance by opening the Azure Portal.

2. In the “Settings” section, choose “Import database.”

3. Set up the Import Parameters:

Give the newly created database a distinctive name.

“Bacpac” should be selected as the source because the import process converts.bak files to the Bacpac format.

Using an upload or a URL, locate the file in Azure Storage and upload the .bacpac file (which was converted from the .bak file).

4. Set Up the Database config:

Select which server is the destination.

Additionally, we can set up the edition, collation, and performance level (DTUs or vCores).

5. Click “Next” to proceed, read the summary, and then select “Apply” or “OK” to initiate the import procedure.

Factors to Consider Before the Restoration

1. Make sure the .bak file is changed to the .bacpac format.

2. For best performance, the storage account and Azure SQL Database should be located in the same Azure region.

3. Check the firewall rules to make sure the client can connect to the Azure SQL Database.

4. The duration of the import process is dependent upon the size of the database.
