More about Roundcube email filters

Roundcube is one of the webmail client used to view and access the emails.

In roundcube, we can easily create email filters through roundcube email interface.

Email filtering is a technique where the email messages separate into different folders based on specified criteria. Moreover, it removes the spam.

Basically, email filters work when an email is received at the email server. The email server forwards and stores the emails based on the filters that is applied to each one.

How we create Roundcube email filters?

Let’s now take a deep look into how our Support Engineers create these email filters.

1. We log into Roundcube.
2. Then we click the settings icon then select Folders.
3. Click the + symbol available at the bottom to add a folder. Then we enter the folder name in the text box.
4. After the creation, the folder name will appear in the roundcube interface below inbox, sent, junk options.
5. Then we click on setting at the top and select Email Filters.
6. Click the Create a New Filter button.
7. After that we enter a Filter name then choose a parameter based on the filter requirements. Then lastly, click the save button.

If it is a non-cPanel server the Email Filter is added from, Click on Setting >> Account >> Mail Filter. Now we enter the filter details and finally click save.

The Roundcube interface changes based on the skin used.

Errors relating to Roundcube email filters

Recently, one of our customers was trying to create a Roundcube email filter and got an error message. Here, is the error message:

Unable to connect to Sieve server

Our Support Engineers started troubleshooting the error by checking the logs from the path /var/log/plesk-roundcube/errors. Since he was using plesk installed server We could find the below error there

ERROR: Connection refused (111)

In Plesk >> Tools & Settings >> Mail Server Settings, Courier-IMAP was shown as installed as the IMAP/POP3 server.

The reason for this error to occur was Courier-IMAP doesn’t support Sieve.

So, we installed dovecot as IMAP/POP3 server.

Log in to Plesk >> Access the Tools & Settings >> Updates and Upgrades >> Add and Remove Product Components >> Mail Hosting and install Dovecot.

Note: Dovecot configuration used by Plesk is compatible with Courier and acts as a drop-in replacement.

Finally, this fixed the error.
