by | Nov 23, 2021

Suspending XFS filesystem made easy with Bobcares by your side.

At Bobcares, we offer solutions for every query, big and small, as a part of our Server Management Service.

Let’s take a look at how our Support Team recently helped out a customer suspend their XFS filesystem and then unfreeze it again.

All about suspending XFS filesystem

If you are looking for a way to suspend or resume write activity to XFS file system, you have come to the right place. According to our Support Techs, the following command will come in handy:

# xfs_freeze mount-point

This uses hardware-based device snapshots to keep the file system in a consistent state.

Furthermore, the xfs_freeze command is a part of the xfsprogs package, which is available only on x86_64.

In order to freeze or suspend the file system, our Support Techs recommend using this command:

# xfs_freeze -f /mount/point

Similarly, you can unfreeze the XFS system via this command:

# xfs_freeze -u /mount/point

Interestingly, if we are taking an LVM snapshot, we do not necessarily have to use xfs_freeze, In fact, the LVM management tools automatically freeze the XFS files system before taking a snapshot.
