All About Using Auto-Discovery in Nagios XI

TheAuto-Discovery in Nagios XI helps locate hosts as well as devices that are not currently being monitored by Nagios XI.

Furthermore, this feature consists of two elements:

  • Auto-Discovery Jobs
  • Auto-Discovery Configuration Wizard

How to use Auto-Discovery Jobs in Nagios XI

According to our Support Team, we can manage Auto-Discovery jobs by heading to Auto-Discovery under COnfiguration Tools in the Confgure section.

We can create a new job by clicking the + New Auto-Discovery Job button. Let’s take a look at the options we need while creating a new job:

  • Scan Target: Enter a network address and netmask in order to define the IP ranges to scan.
  • Exclude IPs: This is of IP addresses and/or network addresses that we want to exclude from the scan. We can access the excluded addresses via ping. However, these addresses will not be scanned for open or available services with nmap.
  • Schedule: Here we mention the schedule we prefer the job to be run.
  • OS Detection: If this is ON, it will try to find the operating system of each host. This option will cause the scan to take more time and may not be 100% accurate.
  • Scan Delay: This is the adjust delay between the probes to a given host. If this is set, it makes Nmap wait the given amount of time between each probe it sends out to a given host. This is useful during rate-limiting.
  • System DNS: If this is ON, it uses system DNS.
  • Custom Ports: This specifies custom ports.

After setting the options, all we have to do is click the Submit button and create the new job. We will notice the job appear on the Auto-Discovery page after it reloads.

After the job finishes running, we will see the list of new devices found. Clicking on the link at the bottom of the Devices found column will take us to the Auto-Discovery configuration wizard.

We have access to the following Job actions on the Auto-Discovery Jobs page in the Action column:

  • Edit Job
  • Re-run Job
  • View Job
  • Delete Job

How to use  Auto-Discovery configuration wizard in Nagios XI

The configuration wizard converts the Auto-Discovery job results into monitored devices. We can click on the New link in the Devices Found column in order to start the Wizard. Alternatively, we can navigate to Auto-Discovery configuration wizard by navigating to Configure > Configuration Wizards > Auto-Discovery wizard.

Here are the options available:

  • Job: We can use this to choose new hosts and services to monitor. The job will be automatically selected. Moreover, it also allows us to launch a new discovery job.
  • Show: This allows us to choose whether to view the results from all hosts found during the scan, or view only new unmonitored hosts.
  • Default Services: This helps us choose the type of services we want to monitor. Furthermore, it allows us to override individual services on the next page.
  • Host Addresses: This allows us to choose the type of addresses for the newly configured hosts.

After setting the options, all we have to do is click Next to proceed.

At this point, we can select the host and service object to create. Furthermore, we can change the name of the host as well as the services. These services are basic port monitoring services like Load and Disk Space.

According to our Support Techs, we can select or deselect the host with the help of the checkbox next to the host address. By deselecting a particular host, none of the services on the right will be monitored.

Once the selections are made, all we have to do is click Next and continue choosing the required options.

Finally, we can click the Finish button in the final step of the wizard.
