What are VPC and Subnet in GCP?

A Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) is a secure and isolated private cloud implemented within a public cloud. It provides a pool of shared resources. Without investing in or maintaining their private cloud infrastructure, a lot of enterprises extract networks from public cloud environments. VPCs give businesses greater control over their spending and resource allocation as they calculate the bills considering the use per hour and are highly elastic.

GCP – VPC And Subnets

What is VPC and subnet in GCP?

We need to develop a project before we can take any action. A project is a billing and permissions-related organizational construct. Projects for some organizations allow diverse settings or apps. Some employ it to give clients invoicing depending on consumption in a cloud-hosted environment. It’s crucial to realize that each project on the Google Cloud Platform has its VPC network(s) that separates it from other projects, and that it’s just a mechanism to manage resources from a billing and rights standpoint.

We can either create automatically or customize the VPC network when we create the GCP project for the first time. If we select auto mode, a default network and many default subnets will be set up and available for use right away. On the default subnets, VM instances install without needing network settings. Each network has its subnets, routes, firewall, internal DNS, and other components.

By looking into the GCP console showing the default network and a default subnet in each region, the VPC network called default is global. Each subnet is regional.

We’ll put an instance in a subnet when we build it. This subnet’s instances can be in any zone within the region that it should present. Instances can communicate with other instances in the same VPC network using their private IP addresses even when subnets are local. Of course, we can use firewall settings to separate these subnets from the rest of the network if we so choose.

We could build additional networks if we require complete separation between distinct apps, clients, etc. The default network is one of the five networks that we can have for a project. A single project may have many networks, which may offer multi-tenancy, IP overlap, or isolation inside the project itself. Instead of having numerous projects, just another choice.

Conclusion

A virtual private cloud (VPC) is created using shared computer resources within a larger public cloud network. Creating a GCP project also creates VPC and related subnets.
