Add MIME type to Apache2

MIME types describe the media type of content, either in email, or served by web servers or web applications.

Basically, they are intended to help provide a hint as to how the content should process and displayed.

Examples of MIME types:

  • text/html for HTML documents.
  • text/plain for plain text.
  • text/css for Cascading Style Sheets.
  • text/javascript for JavaScript files.
  • text/markdown for Markdown files.
  • application/octet-stream for binary files where user action is expected.

Server default configurations vary wildly and set different default MIME-type values for files with no defined content type.

MIME types can add to the servers httpd.conf file.

However, this requires the server to then restart for any changes to take effect.

Alternatively, the new MIME types can add to a .htaccess file placed in the same directory as the files.

In either case, the MIME entries take the format:

AddType application/vnd.android.package-archive
AddType file/download .sig .sig256

Setting up MIME Types with Apache

In Apache, the mappings between MIME types and file extensions are store in the configuration file apache_home/conf/mime.types, where apache_home is the path under which Apache was install on your server.

To set up MIME types, open the mime.types file. Lines that begin with the # character are comments and they will ignore by Apache.

Each of the other lines begins with a MIME type, then follows by one or more file extensions. It has the following form:

mimeType fileExtension1 fileExtension2 fileExtension3 …

Here are some examples:

text/html html htm
application/vnd.wap.xhtml+xml xhtml
text/vnd.wap.wml wml
text/vnd.wap.wmlscript wmls
image/vnd.wap.wbmp wbmp
