Ansible Cloudflare Tunnel: A Guide

by | May 3, 2023

 Let us learn how to setup the ansible cloudflare tunnel with the support of our Server management support services at Bobcares.

What is ansible cloudflare tunnel?

ansible cloudflare tunnel

Ansible is a free and open-source automation tool for configuration management, application deployment, and job automation.

Cloudflare Tunnel is a solution that allows us to expose a private application to the public internet by establishing a safe and encrypted link between a server on your network and the Cloudflare network.

The Ansible Cloudflare Tunnel role automates the configuration and deployment of the Cloudflare Tunnel on the servers.

The role automates the installation of the Cloudflare Tunnel client, setup of the required parameters, and generation of the systemd service files required to operate the client as a service.

We can quickly install Cloudflare Tunnel to numerous servers in the architecture by utilizing this Ansible role, guaranteeing that private applications are safely and reliably accessible to the public internet.

This is especially beneficial for apps that require internet connection but must be kept secure behind a firewall or other security measures.

Deploy Tunnels with Ansible?

Ansible is a software application that provides infrastructure management at scale. It does not require an agent to work; all it requires is the ability to SSH to the target and Python installed on the target.

Ansible collaborates with Terraform to automate the Cloudflare Tunnel setup procedure.

Requirements for Ansible Cloudflare tunnel setup

We will need the following items to complete the steps:

  • Installed and authorized Google Cloud Project and GCP CLI
  • A Cloudflare zone.
  • A Cloudflare API token that includes Cloudflare Tunnel and DNS access.

Setup Process

Install Ansible:

To connect to the GCP server, Terraform and Ansible require an unencrypted SSH key. If there uis no key, we can create one by following these steps:

  1. Enter the following command into a terminal:

    $ ssh-keygen -t rsa -f ~/.ssh/gcp_ssh -C username in GCP

  2. When prompted for a password, enter it twice to leave it blank. Terraform is unable to decrypt encrypted private keys.

    Two files will be created: gcp_ssh.pub, which includes the public key, and gcp_ssh.private, which contains the private key.

Set up a configuration directory

  1. Make a directory for the Terraform and Ansible configuration files:

    $ mkdir ansible-tunnel

  2. Move to the New Directory

    $ cd ansible-tunnel
