Cagefs can’t find binaries

Typically, errors might look as shown below:

Can't exec "/usr/sbin/sendmail": No such file or directory
su: failed to execute /bin/bash: No such file or directory
cagefs_enter_user: /bin/bash: No such file or directory

One of the cause for this issue is a broken cpanel-wrap package.

Today, let us see the steps followed by our Support Techs to resolve it.

Run the check cPanel rpm script to verify and fix if you are impacted by this issue.

/usr/local/cpanel/scripts/check_cpanel_rpms --fix

If the script detected an issue with the cpanel-wrap package and reinstalled the package, we need to rebuild CageFS.

How to rebuild Cagefs?

CageFS is a virtualized file system and a set of tools to contain each user in its own ‘cage’.

Each customer will have its own fully functional CageFS, with all the system files, tools, etc.

You can review more about the Cagefs and the commands that are accessible here: Cagefs

Procedure

Remount CageFS, then force an update:

cagefsctl -M
cagefsctl --force-update

If all else fails, reinitialize CageFS:

cagefsctl --reinit
