DHCP Relay pfSense Firewall Rules | Setup Steps

by | Sep 30, 2023

Enabling the DHCP relay service and allowing the DHCP traffic to pass through the firewall are required for setting the DHCP relay on pfSense and making the firewall rules. At Bobcares, with our pfSense Support Services, we can handle your issues.

Setting DHCP Relay on pfSense and Making the Firewall Rules

The steps to set up the DHCP relay on pfSense and make the necessary firewall rules are as follows:

1. Use a web browser to access the pfSense web interface.

2. Navigate to the “Services” > “DHCP Relay” option in pfSense.

3. Choose the interface that will relay DHCP requests. This generally occurs on an interface (like OPT1) that has DHCP clients but no DHCP server.

4. Toggle the checkbox next to “Enable DHCP Relay on [Interface].”

5. We must provide the IP address of the DHCP server to which the DHCP requests will be forwarded in the “Relay Servers” section. The DHCP server’s IP address should be entered; it is typically found on a different interface or network segment.

6. In order to keep the DHCP relay settings, click the “Save” button.

7. After saving, turn on the DHCP relay service by clicking the “Apply Changes” button at the top of the pfSense web interface.

8. Creating firewall rules now Go to “Firewall” > “Rules” on the pfSense web interface.

9. Select the interface (for instance, OPT1) where the DHCP relay is in ‘enable’ state.

10. Select the “Add” button in order to create a new rule.

11. Now, set up the rules by setting the parameters such as Action, Interface, Address Family, and more.

12. Enter the source and destination port ranges for the DHCP server.

13. To make the rule, click the “Save” button.

14. To activate the new firewall rule after saving, click the “Apply Changes” button at the top of the pfSense web interface.

Conclusion

With these modifications, pfSense should now let DHCP traffic pass past the firewall while relaying DHCP requests from clients on the designated interface to the DHCP server.
