How to Generate a CSR for Nginx
The below instructions will guide you through the CSR generation process on Nginx (OpenSSL).
1. Log in to the server’s terminal.
You need to log in through Secure Shell (SSH).
2. Enter CSR and Private Key commands.
Next, generate a private key and CSR by running the below command. You can copy the below command and paste it into your terminal:
openssl req -new -newkey rsa:2048 -nodes -keyout server.key -out domain.csr
Replace “domain ” with the website name you intend to secure.
3. Enter your CSR details.
Further, enter the following CSR details when prompted:
- Common Name: The fully-qualified domain name you want to secure with the certificate. Adding domain/ website name: www.google.com, secure.website.org, *.domain.net, etc.
- Organization: The legal company name of your organization as it is legally registered.
- Organization Unit (OU): Department or team such as ‘Information Technology’ or ‘Website Security.’
- City or Locality: The locality or city where your company legally located.
- State or Province: State where the organization is headquartered.
- Country: the country where the organization is headquartered. Use a 2-letter country code.
Note: No need to enter a password or passphrase. Optional field for applying additional security to key pair.
4. Generate the order.
Now locate and open the newly generated CSR in a text editor. Copying all the text including from:
-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE REQUEST-----
And
-----END CERTIFICATE REQUEST-----
The CSR needs to save in the same user directory that you SSH.
We recommend saving your newly generate “.key ” file. As this will require later during the installation process.
Return to the Generation Form on our website and paste the CSR into the blank text box and next continue with completing the generation process.
Your order will now enter the validation process. You will also get Certificate Authority (CA) and require the certificate requester to complete some form of validation depending on the purchased certificate.
