Why is it not possible to add CNAME record on Plesk server
This particular error pops up when we attempt to add CNAME on the Plesk server as seen below:
It results in one of the following error messages depending on the scenario:
- For single domain:
This record will conflict with the glue record for the zone 'example.com'
- For DNS template:
CNAME DNS zone record cannot coexist with other DNS records in the same zone.
Before we move on, let’s take a quick look at CNAME records. Also known as Canonical Records, they are a type of DNS record that maps alias names to the true or canonical domain name.
We often use CNAME records to map a subdomain like www or mail to the specific domain hosting the subdomain’s content. Moreover. CNAME records are of use only when there are no records on that particular name.
Interestingly, the error is due to adding records prohibited by RFC1912. In other words, it is not possible to add them through Plesk.
According to our Support Team, this specific issue does not apply to ALIAS or ANAME DNS records. Moreover, the feature that allows us to add these DNS records is not yet available in Plesk.
While we can attempt to manually add the records to the DNS zone files, this will cause the BIND server to fail to restart.
