With Jumbo frames in pfSense, we can enhance network performance. Bobcares, as a part of our pfSense Support Services offers solutions to every query that comes our way.

Jumbo frames in pfSense

A networking feature called jumbo frames enables us to go above the typical Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) size of 1500 bytes used in Ethernet networks. We can enhance network performance by using jumbo frames, especially with huge amounts of data.

When enabling jumbo frames in a pfSense environment, there are a few crucial factors to take into account:

1. Firstly, all hardware in the network path, including network switches, routers, and network interface cards (NICs), must support jumbo frames. Packet fragmentation or packet drops resulting from any device along the path not supporting jumbo frames.

2. Also, the identical MTU size must be on each device connected to the network. This implies that the settings for the sending and receiving devices must be the same.

3. We can use jumbo frames with Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) or faster network connections. However, while some networks and devices may support jumbo frames over Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps), higher-speed connections are more typical of them.

4. By lowering the overhead associated with smaller frames, jumbo frames have the potential to enhance network performance. However, depending on variables like the type of traffic, network load, and the particular programs being used, the actual performance boost may differ.

5. There are two typical jumbo frame sizes: 9000 bytes and 9216 bytes. All of the hardware in the network should be capable of supporting the MTU size we select. It’s also crucial to take into account any potential encapsulation-related overhead, as certain protocols—like VLAN tagging—might raise the necessary effective MTU size.

6. We must set up managed switches in the network to support jumbo frames on the appropriate interfaces. To enable jumbo frames, some switches might need a special setup.

7. We must set up the network interface on devices with network interfaces (such as computers and servers) to use jumbo frames. The network settings of the operating system are often where this is done.

8. It’s good to verify the settings in an environment before enabling jumbo frames in a production situation. Keep an eye out for any network problems, including missed packets or increased latency.

9. Also, all software, hardware, or services might function properly with jumbo frames. For instance, some virtualization platforms might not completely support jumbo frames.

Conclusion

When configuring jumbo frames in pfSense, we must make sure that every device in the network, including switches, routers, and linked devices, is capable of supporting the greater MTU size.

Does this mean that guests/clients that login will create problems without manually setting the jumbo frames?

      Hello,
Yes, guests or clients logging into a network that uses jumbo frames can create problems if their devices are not manually configured to support the same jumbo frame size.
