How to access Webmail in Plesk?

As we know, Webmail allows checking e-mail accounts through a web browser. So, Webmail comes handy when traveling and your server has region-specific IP restriction.

Let’s quickly see how Webmail is accessed in Plesk.

To access Webmail in Plesk, users follow these steps:

1. Log in to Plesk.

2. Click Mail and locate the account to access Webmail, and then click the Webmail icon.

3. On the Webmail login page, type the username and password for the e-mail account.

4. Click Login.

Now, it’s much easy to access your webmail right?

But, often you may find Plesk Webmail not working with errors like “ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED” or “404 not found“.

Let’s now see how our Support Engineers solve the problems related to “Webmail not Working in Plesk”.

Why is “Webmail not Working in Plesk”?

Let’s begin with the reasons that cause Webmail failure in Plesk one by one.

1. Mail service disabled

In most of the cases, this error happens when the mail service becomes disabled in the Plesk server. Usually, it happens when users change the Webmail settings of the domain.

2. DNS issue

Similarly, another reason that makes Webmail inaccessible in the browser is email (or domain) migration. After domain migration, we have to update DNS zone to make the records point to the new server. Due to the fact that DNS propagation takes up to 48 hours to complete, webmail link can report resolving errors.

3. Redirection not set

Often for security purpose, users add SSL certificate to their domain. But, the server may not have proper redirection rules enabled for webmail. This is also can make Webmail inaccessible.

How we fix “Webmail not Working in Plesk”

Now, it’s the time to take a look at how our Technical Team solves “Webmail not Working in Plesk”.

Recently, one of our customers approached us with a problem and his Webmail reported the error “This site can’t be reached“. The customer had setup Plesk control panel in his server.

Let’s see how our Support Engineers fixed the issue “Webmail not Working in Plesk” by following the steps below.

1. Initially, we checked if the domain name resolves to correct IP.

2. By checking we found that the domain name resolves correctly.

3. After that, we checked if the MX Record resolves to correct IP. Unfortunately, it showed the error message as “Unknown: No response from the server.”

4. So, we added proper “A-record” for the mail.domain  in the DNS zone of the domain.

5. Usually, DNS propagation takes up to 48 hours. So, we asked our customer to wait until it propagates completely.

6. After the propagation time, the customer could access the Webmail successfully.

Similarly, to solve Webmail errors due to mail service disabled, we log in to Plesk control panel and activate Mail service on the domain under Mail > Mail Accounts > Mail Settings.

For fixing redirects, our Dedicated Engineers add proper rewrite rules for the webmail links. To fix this in Plesk, we edit the file /usr/local/psa/admin/conf/templates/custom/webmail/webmail.php and add relevant rewrite rules. Then, reconfigure the configuration of all domains with the command:

/usr/local/psa/admin/sbin/httpdmng --reconfigure-all
