Proxmox USB Passthrough

If you plan to pass through physical USB devices in Proxmox it is essential to determine which device is the right fit. In this scenario, we have to plug or unplug the device to determine if it works.

Proxmox USB Passthrough

Our experts have put together the following steps to help you out:

  1. First, open a shell and run the following command to check which USB devices are currently plugged into the Proxmox host.

    lssusb

The output of this command includes the ID of the different USB devices plugged in as well. Since we need the ID, we can run this command and try plugging or unplugging our USB device to determine its ID.

  2. Next, we are going to add the USB device to the virtual machine. This can be done via the Shell or GUI seen below:
    • Via Shell:

We have to run the following command after replacing VMID and USB IS with the corresponding VM ID and USB device ID.

      qm set [VMID] -usb0 host=[USBID]

    • Via GUI
      1. First, we have to log in to the Proxmox VE web GUI.
      2. Then, head to Virtual Machine under node/cluster name in the Datacenter section.
      3. Next, click Hardware, followed by Add button.
      4. After that, we must click USB Device from the drop-down menu.
      5. Finally, choose the corresponding USB device to passthrough. Remember to enable Use USB3 if it is a USB3 device.
      6. Then, click Add to save the changes.
