How to resolve: Recipient address rejected email sending quota exceeded

If you have been coming across the “550 Mailbox quota exceeded” error while trying to send an email to a recipient, you are in the right place. This error often pops up due to the recipient of the email having insufficient space in their inbox. These errors continue popping up until the recipient creates space in the inbox or increases the mail quota.

Error 550 message looks similar to the message below:

This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.
A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed: user@domain.com
SMTP error from remote mail server after RCPT TO:<user@domain.com>:
host domain.com [11.22.33.44]: 550 Mailbox quota exceeded

How to Increase the Mail Quota

If other people report getting an error 550 message while attempting to send you emails, it is time to delete emails and attachments from the mailbox. Alternatively, we can also increase the mail quota. We can do this by following these steps courtesy of the proficient Support Team at Bobcares:

    • First, head to the My cPanel in the HostPapa Dashboard.

Recipient address rejected email sending quota exceeded

    • Then, scroll to the Email sections and choose Email Accounts.
    • Next, scroll down the page till we see a list of configured email accounts. Locate the account we want to manage and click Quota to verify the current usage.
    • After that, we are taken to the Mailbox Quota settings. We can enter the new value ( in megabytes) that is larger than the current quota.
    • Finally, click the Quota button and save the change.

Although the above process allows us to increase the Mail Quota of our inbox, some HostPapa email services have preset quota limits that we cannot change.
