by | Sep 21, 2019

Forgetting passwords stop you from accessing applications like OpenCart.

And, when you lose access details, the only option is to reset OpenCart admin password.

However, OpenCart password reset may often fail due to incorrect database settings and much more.

At Bobcares, we often get requests from our customers to change the OpenCart admin password as part of our Server Management Services.

Today, we’ll see how our Support Engineers change the admin password for OpenCart and fixed related errors.

How we change the OpenCart Password

Often, OpenCart users can forget their passwords. Then, they try to retrieve the password via the Forgotten Password link. And, when even the retrieval of password fails, the only option is to reset the admin password.

This requires the reset of password in the database. For that, we use phpMyAdmin in cPanel to change the password of the admin account.

1. Firstly, we log into cPanel and click on phpMyAdmin.

2. Then, we select the database that the OpenCart store uses.

3. After that, we find the user table and then click on Edit, next to the admin user.

3. Next, we select MD5 from the dropdown menu which corresponding to the Password field. Also, we remove the encrypted password and enter the preferred password there.

4. Finally, click on the Go button to save the changes.

How we fixed related errors

Now, let’s see how our Support Engineers solved the problems that occur while changing the OpenCart admin password.

1. Incorrect database connection in the configuration file

Recently, one of our customers contacted us with a problem after changing the OpenCart admin password. He couldn’t log in to the OpenCart admin panel even after changing the password.

OpenCart has 2 files /confing.php and /admin/config.php with the connecting data. Also, the database connection in /config.php and /admin/config.php are the same.

On checking our Support Engineers found that the database connection details in /admin/config.php were incorrect. Therefore we reset the admin password and set the new value in the file. Additionally, we corrected the username too.

That fixed the problem and OpenCart started working fine.

2. Special characters

Sometimes, users can’t log in OpenCart admin panel after changing the password even with correct login credentials. This may happen due to the presence of special characters like @,&.

That means, while resetting password users may include an @, & and * to strengthen the password. But, this may not be updated correctly in the database password field.

So, we suggest our customers try with an alternate password. Or, we generate a strong password and reset it for the customer.
