Let’s look into the steps to use Tailscale on pfSense. Bobcares, as a part of our pfSense Support Services offers solutions to every query that comes our way.
Tailscale on pfSense
Tailscale is a zero-configuration VPN, which means we can access all of the local network’s devices without any port forwarding. Now that Tailscale is supported on pfSense, it’s an excellent place to run Tailscale.
It is important to keep in mind that if we prefer a more traditional VPN, we may still use OpenVPN or WireGuard. However, both of these techniques necessitate port forwarding, whereas Tailscale does not. Tailscale is relatively simple to configure, and we’ll look at how to configure Tailscale on pfSense below.
Steps to use Tailscale on pfSense
1. Go to System, then to Package Manager.
2. Go to Tailscale and install the Tailscale package.
3. Click VPN, then Tailscale to access the Tailscale settings.
4. We now need to configure the pre-authentication key. This can be done using the Tailscale website. Create an account if we don’t already have one, then log in and go to Settings, then Keys.
5. Choose Create auth key to generate the key for pfSense. Select Generate Key (the settings can be left alone).
6. Once the key has been generated, copy it and return to the Tailscale Authentication area on pfSense.
7. Paste the newly formed key, then click Save.
8. After saving, go to Settings, activate Tailscale, and save.
