by | Nov 8, 2022

Let’s see the steps to transfer files to Droplets with FileZilla. At Bobcares, with our DigitalOcean Managed Services, we can handle your DigitalOcean Droplets issues.

How to transfer files to Droplets with FileZilla?

Several different file transfer protocols and clients can be used to move files from a local computer to a Droplet. Because FileZilla is a free, open-source, cross-platform tool with a simple interface, we are using it here all together with SFTP.

Transfer Files to Droplets With FileZilla

We have to first install and set up FileZilla before transferring the files to a Droplet.

Installing FileZilla

We have to download and install FileZilla to the system from which we want to transfer files. We can download it from the official site. However, we can also use the APT package manager on Debian-based Linux distributions.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install filezilla
Setting-up FileZilla

We should now configure it so that we can connect it to the Droplet. To configure, run the below steps:

1. Firstly, start FileZilla.

2. Click Settings in the Edit drop-down menu.

3. Click SFTP in the Connection section. (Here we need to provide the Droplet’s private SSH key)

4. So click “Add key file…”. Then locate the Droplet’s private SSH key on the local machine. (Click Yes if FileZilla asks to convert the file into a supported format)

5. Once the key is added, we should now open the File drop-down menu and click Site Manager.

6. Then click New Site and provide the Droplet name. Then we have to provide some details. Fill in the details as follows:

  • Protocol: Choose SFTP
  • Host: Droplet’s IP address
  • Port: Port we use to connect to the Droplet
  • Logon Type: Choose the “Interactive” option.
  • User: Enter the username we are connecting to the Droplet with

7. Finally, click the Connect button.

The connection status is shown in the status field in the top window.

After the connection is created, we can now start the transfer process.

1. Go to the directories of the local machine and locate the files we want to upload. We can use Local site windows for this purpose.

2. To upload a file to the Droplet, simply right-click it and choose Upload.

3. Use the Remote site windows to browse the Droplet’s directories and find the files we want to download to our local machine. This will allow us to transfer files from the Droplet to our computer.

4. Click Download after selecting the file from the Droplet by right-clicking.
