Ubuntu 18.04 shutdown stuck issue on Xubuntu
If you have been running Xubuntu on Ubuntu 18.04 and run into the shutdown error, you are in luck.
Many of our customers have run into this common problem. Fortunately, there are several ways to solve this issue. Let’s look at these solutions.
Switch to the Proprietary NVIDIA Driver
Most of the time switching from the X.org graphics driver to the proprietary NVIDIA driver has helped fix the shutdown issue.
- To begin with, open “Software & Updates.”
- Then, head to the “Additional Drivers” tab and choose the recommended NVIDIA driver.
- Finally, reboot the system.
Disable Automatic Suspend & Blank Screen
Another way to fix the problem is to disable all “Automatic Suspend” options and set the “Blank screen” to “Never.” We can do this by heading to Power under Settings and making the needed changes.
Different Reboot Options
Furthermore, using different reboot commands from the terminal can resolve the problem. Here are some of the commands we can try:
- – `sudo reboot -d`: Reboots the system without writing the wtmp file.
- – `sudo reboot -f`: Forces the system to reboot.
Clean Installation
In case we recently upgraded from Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04 and are running into shutdown issues, we can try a clean installation as a solution.
Change GRUB Settings
We can change the GRUB settings by editing the `/etc/default/grub` file. Here, we must change the `GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT` line to include options like `acpi=force` or `intel_idle.max_cstate=1`.
Then we have to run the `sudo update-grub` command in the terminal and reboot our system.
Disable Secure Boot
Alternatively, disabling the “secure boot” function in the BIOS can fix the issue temporarily. This involves going to the BIOS settings and turning off secure boot until we have a permanent solution.
Install Updated Graphics Drivers
In some cases, installing updated graphic drivers has helped some of our customers fix the error.
Remove Conflicting Boot Options
We can try removing conflicting boot options like `acpi=off` or `noapic` to resolve the issue.
Disable USB 3.0 Driver
In some cases, disabling the USB 3.0 driver in the BIOS has helped fix the issue.
Monitor Memory & Resource Usage
Alternatively, excessive memory or resource usage by some processes can cause our system to freeze during the shutdown. So, try restarting the system and keeping an eye on resource usage to avoid the error.
