Easy fix for VPN error 429!!

by | Oct 16, 2019

Ever wondered why we get a VPN error 429?

Usually, we use a VPN to have secure connections. But, some errors are common while connecting VPN over the internet.

Error 429 is one such error that occurs due to connection failure between the VPN client and server.

At Bobcares, we often receive requests to fix VPN errors as part of our VPN Management Services.

Today, let’s have a clear idea of VPN error 429 and its fix.

What is VPN error 429?

Basically, this is a common error faced by VPN users.

But, there is an important fact about this error which makes it different from other VPN errors. It is the only client software error that can cause a failure to connect. All other errors are usually due to problems at the VPN service provider’s end.

This error occurs when the VPN client fails to connect with the VPN server.

Usually, if this error occurs, VPN users will get an error message as follows.

Unable to establish the VPN connection. The server may be unreachable.

Let’s now see the methods to fix this error.

How to fix this error?

As we have already said, error 429 is a client-side error. So, our Dedicated Engineers suggest the different methods to fix this error effectively.

Let’s discuss how we troubleshoot the VPN errors.

1. Ensure proper internet connection

We begin checking by ensuring that the computer has a proper internet connection. If the connecting device has no internet connection, they cannot connect to any kind of network. Thus, it ends up in a VPN error.

Therefore, we check and make sure that other websites and servers are reachable from the machine.

2. Rule out DNS errors

Further, we rule out any sort of DNS errors. We confirm this by checking the resolvability of the VPN server name. This includes double-checking the names for any typo errors too.

3. Modifying Network connection settings

Even without any DNS or internet connection errors, if the user still gets VPN error 429, then it must be the network settings of the connecting machine. Therefore, we suggest customers edit the IP address settings from the Control Panel by following the below steps:

  1. Log in to the Control Panel.
  2. Then, click on Network Connections to access properties.
  3. After that, choose the Internet Protocol option in the Properties tab.
  4. Next, enable the checkboxes for “Obtain an IP address automatically” and “Obtain DNS server address automatically”.
  5. Finally, click on the Connect option to activate the VPN tunnel.

This will resolve the error.

4. Resetting IP connection

Unfortunately, in some cases, VPN errors still exist. Therefore, it might need an IP connection reset.

For instance, releasing and renewing the IP address on a computer running the Windows operating system resets the underlying IP connection. This often eliminates common IP-related issues.

We recommend customers to use the fail-safe steps in the command line to fix the error.

  1. Firstly, open the DOS command prompt.
  2. Next, type “ipconfig /release” and press ‘Enter’.
  3. After that, type “ipconfig /renew” and press ‘Enter’.
  4. Then, type “Exit” and close the DOS command prompt window.
  5. Finally, “Connect” will activate the VPN tunnel.
