MIME types help the browser determine what type of content is about to be processed, so the browser can use the proper protocols, codec, and media player to display the data correctly.

The MIME types file maps the extensions .html and .htm: type=text/html exts=htm, html.

When a web server delivers a web page to a client web browser it also sends the MIME type of data.

If in case there are attached or embedded files in a specific format then IIS tells the client application regarding the MIME type of the embedded or attached file. IIS can operate files of registered MIME types.
