DigitalOcean increase volume size with two steps

by | Feb 7, 2020

Do you want to increase the volume size of DigitalOcean Droplet? We can help you with it.

To increase the volume, first, we resize from the panel and expand it from the droplet.

At Bobcares, we often get requests to increase volume size as a part of our DigitalOcean Managed Services.

Today, let’s see how our Support Engineers increase volume size for our customers.

Digitalocean increase volume size

We can increase the volume size by two steps.

First, we resize the volume to increase the volume. Then we expand the volume to use the added space.

We can only increase the volume size, and we cannot decrease it. Thus, it is advisable to increase the size only per current requirement.

Let’s discuss how our Support Engineers increase a volume size in DigitalOcean.

How we increase the volume size?

Recently, one of our customers contacted us to increase the volume size of his DigitalOcean Droplet. Now, let’s discuss how our Support Engineers increase the volume for our customers.

First we login to the DigitalOcean control panel.

Before increasing the volume size it is advisable to take the snapshot of the droplet. Since increasing the volume involve risk, the change in filesystem might lead to data loss.

Thus our Support Engineers take a snapshot of the Droplet and then proceed with resizing the volume.

For that, we click on Volumes in the left pane. In the volume, we click on More.

From the drop-down, we click on Increase size.

Now we select the new size of the volume. We have to choose at least 1 GB higher than the current volume.

Then we click on Resize volume to change the volume size.

Now we need to expand the Filesystem.

Expand ext4 filesystem

Initially, we login to the droplet. For unpartitioned volumes using ext4 filesystem to pass /dev/disk/by-id volume identifier. We use the command.

resize2fs /dev/disk/by-id/scsi-0DO_volume

We find the SCSI volume ID from the volume information.

Thus the filesystem will be resized.

Then we verify the filesystem. If the volume does not reflect, then we restart the droplet.

Expand XFS filesystem

For unpartitioned volumes using the XFS filesystem, we use the xfs_growfs tool. For that, we use the command.

sudo xfs_growfs /mnt/your_mount_point

Thus the filesystem will be resized.

Then we verify the filesystem. If the volume does not reflect then we restart the droplet.
