How to accomplish DNN Upgrade – Common errors and fix

by | Dec 9, 2019

Would you like to accomplish a DNN upgrade? We can help you with that.

Upgrading the website to the latest version is one of the good practices to be followed. Since the security patches are released in the update.

At Bobcares, we often receive requests for upgrading DNN and fix its related errors as part of our Server Management Services.

Today, let’s see how our Support Engineers upgrade DNN and resolve the possible errors.

How we upgrade DNN?

Let’s discuss how our Support Engineers update DNN with few steps.

First, our Support Engineers take the backup of the website and database before an update.

Now we analyze the DNN version and select the upgrade path. The latest DNN version is DNN 9.3. The upgrade needs to be done from DNN 8 to DNN 9.1. And then we update to DNN 9.3.

Then from our upgrade files, we copy the files and paste them into the httpdocs (website folder). A prompt appears to replace the files. Click OK.

We watch the upgrade process from domain.com/install/install.aspx?mode=upgrade.

Also, we continue to monitor the progress until the process is complete.

If it finishes without an error on the page, the process is completed successfully.

If any error occurs our Support Engineers analyze the error and resolve it.

For further upgrade, we take the backup of the site files and database after each successful upgrade. If any error occurs in the next update we can revert it back to the previous version.

Common error with DNN upgrade

The possible error we face while upgrading DNN is because of the DNN module. One of the common modules that can cause a problem is IFrame. If the IFrame module is present, the module must be updated before upgrading DNN. Let’s discuss how our Support Engineers stop the error from occurring.

We login to the website as host.

Then we open the Setting and click on the extension. From our latest Iframe files, we update the module.

After the update, we proceed to upgrade DNN.

Other modules can also cause a problem. We find the module that is causing the error during the upgrade.

We find it from domain.com/install/install.aspx?mode=upgrade. After finding the module we investigate the module and resolve the error.
