A flexible and effective tool for manipulating URLs is mod_rewrite. It also offers an infinite number of rules. We can rewrite URLs based on server variables, environment variables, HTTP headers, or time stamps by attaching an unlimited number of associated rule conditions to each rule.

The entire URL route, including the path-info section, is processed by mod_rewrite. So we can use a rewrite rule in .htaccess or httpd.conf. A query string may be included in the path that a rewrite rule creates, or it may result in internal sub-processing, external request redirection, or internal proxy throughput.

Steps to enable mod_rewrite using cPanel

We must run the below steps to enable mod_rewrite using cPanel:

• Firstly, go to the cPanel control panel and log in.
• Then select the “Public_html” folder by clicking the “File Manager” icon.
• Now we can access the .htaccess file by choosing “Show hidden documents”.
• In order to use the file, click “Continue”.
• Click the file name and choose “Edit file with Code Editor” if the .htaccess file already exists. Else, we must create the .htaccess file if it does not already exist by selecting “Create new file” and entering .htaccess in the specified box.
• Then select “Confirm”.
• In order to activate mod_rewrite, click the “RewriteEngine On” button;
• Lastly, to finish the process, click “Save changes”.
