How to Use cPanel’s PowerDNS

The PowerDNS open-source DNS server software provides high performance without high memory requirements. In fact, it reads DNS data from BIND files and then stores the DNS Security Extensions data in an SQLite database, thereby making it compatible with cPanel’s DNS Management tools.

How to install PowerDNS 

1. First, head to Nameserver Selection under Service Configuration in the Home section of the WHM interface.
2. Then, select PowerDNS and click Save.

According to our Support Techs, we can check the server’s PowerDNS version by running WHM API 1’s installed_versions function. This results in an output that contains the powerdns return, thereby displaying the PowerDNS version on the server.

The PowerDNS permits usage of DNS Security Extension with the domains’ DNS records. Furthermore. DNSSEC adds an additional layer of security to the domains’ DNS records. This is done via digital signatures and cryptographic keys in order to authenticate the validity of the DNS responses.

Moreover, these digital signatures prevent clients from being vulnerable to different forms of attacks like spoofing, man-in-the-middle, and so on.

We can easily enable DNSSEC by heading to Zone Editor under Domains in Home in the cPanel interface.

If the PowerDNS is installed in WHM, we have to head to WHM > Home > Service Configuration > Nameserver Selection in order to enable DNSSEC.
