Zone Transfer AXFR and IXFR | Guide

Did you know that Xone transfers are used in the Domain Name System to replicate DNS zone data between authoritative DNS servers?

These transfers are key in maintaining consistent and up-to-date DNS information across multiple servers.

Zone Transfer AXFR and IXFR

cPanel offers a DNS management interface that lets us manage DNS zones for our domains. It uses the BIND nameserver software to handle DNS. We can use the interface to configure zone transfers.

Let’s take a quick look at how cPanel handles DNS zone transfers using AXFR and IXFR.

AXFR (Full Zone Transfer) in cPanel

In cPanel, an AXFR (Full Zone Transfer) lets us copy the entire DNS zone from one cPanel-managed DNS server to another.

To set up an AXFR in cPanel:

  1. To begin with, we have to configure the slave DNS server’s IP address in the “Edit Zone Templates” or “Edit DNS Zone” section of cPanel.
  2. When we make changes to the DNS zone on the master server, cPanel will automatically initiate a full zone transfer to update the slave server.

IXFR (Incremental Zone Transfer) in cPanel

In cPanel, an IXFR (Incremental Zone Transfer) lets us transfer only the changes in the DNS zone since the last transfer.

To set up an IXFR in cPanel:

  1. First, enable DNSSEC for the zone on the master server.
  2. Then, configure the slave DNS server’s IP address as a secondary nameserver in the “Edit Zone Templates” or “Edit DNS Zone” section.
  3. When changes are made to the DNS zone on the master server, cPanel will start an incremental zone transfer to update the slave server with only the changes.

DNS Cluster – cPanel Feature

cPanel also offers a DNS clustering feature. It lets us manage multiple cPanel DNS servers and synchronize DNS zones between them. With DNS clustering, we can set up master-slave relationships.
