How to configure MyDNS-NG
If you are looking for a way to configure MyDNS-NG, you have come to the right place. Our Support Team has put together this guide to help out. MyDNS-NG is a DNS server software. It stores the server’s DNS zone files in a database. This makes it easier to manage a large number of zone records efficiently.
According to our Support Team, MyDNS requires the following configuration in order to run on the cPanel and WHM server:
- BIND
- MySQL® version 5.0 or later
- cPanel & WHM version 11.32 or later
How to install MyDNS
It is essential to note that we cannot install MyDNS during the WHM and cPanel installation process. The installation process of MyDNS via the WHM interface involves the following steps:
- First, head to WHM and go to WHM > Home > Service Configuration > Nameserver Selection.
- Next, choose MyDNS and click Save.
We can install MyDNS via the command line with the following command:
/usr/local/cpanel/scripts/setupnameserver mydns
How to return to MyDNS from another DNS server
- First, run the command below to force a DNS import as the root user:
/scripts/importmydnsdb –force
- Then, execute the following command as a root user to restart MyDNS:
/scripts/restartsrv_mydns
After installation of MyDNS, the system syncs the zone files in the /var/named/ directory and the records in the MyDNS database.
Moreover, every server that relies on MyDNS has its own MySQL database for MyDNS. Additionally, the server’s database name tallies with the mydns_hostname format, where the hostname is the server’s hostname.
How to set up MyDNS on remote MySQL servers
- First, head to WHM > Home > SQL Services > Manage MySQL Profiles.
- When we run MyDNS on a MySQL server, each connected server has its own unique database of zone files. Furthermore, the MySQL server accesses these zone files from the server without retaining a central copy of them.
In order to ensure MySQL responds to WHM, we can try one of the following tips:
- Head to WHM > Home > SQL Services > Show MySQL Processes. The system will display the SHOW PROCESSLIST query if MySQL responds.
- Run the command below as root user:
netstat -tap | grep mysql
The system returns information similar to the one below if MySQL responds:
tcp 0 0 *:mysql : LISTEN 17280/mysqld
According to our Support Team, we can troubleshoot MyDNS further by checking the error logs below:
- /var/log/messages — The MyDNS error log
- /usr/local/cpanel/logs/error_log — The WHM error log
- /usr/local/cpanel/logs/dnsadmin_log — The dnsadmin error log
